The Japan Airlines mobile site provides the most important elements for a travelers journey: ticket purchase, check in, reservations, arrivals and departures. You will need to enter your location and language when you first open the site as it won’t automatically match your location. Overall this app offers a solid user experience, and here’s why…

Japan Airlines

You are able to purchase round trip or one way tickets on Japan Airlines. The mobile site will not allow you to book multi-city destinations. You can choose to have flexible dates to find the best offer near your selected timeframe. While you are able to purchase multiple tickets, you are unable to choose different classes for each ticket. After you have put in your request dates and destinations, Japan Airlines will give you the option to view different classes to see price differences and choose a different class if you wish to. Once you have made your choices, the app will give you fare breakdown and a clear view of your itinerary so you know exactly what you are purchasing. If you exit out of the purchase process at any time, your flights will not save and you will need to begin the purchase process over again. Japan Airlines tells what step you are in the process as you book at the top of the page.

Japan Airlines mobile check in The check in page allows you to check in 72 hours before your flight. You can log in using your JAL Mileage account or your reservation. You can choose to have your boarding pass sent to your email, you can print it at home or you can use a mobile boarding pass. You will not be able to save your boarding pass to your Google wallet or Passbook.

The Japan Airlines flights also let you check for arrivals and departures. You can search by flight number or by departure and arrival destinations. You need to fill in all the available boxes in your search even if they are not marked mandatory with an asterisk. Failing to do so will bring up an error page and you will need to fill in all the fields. You will find results but the mobile website does not integrate with calendar or allow you to set notifications to alert you on flight information.

The lack of a flight status feature is a drawback to the Japan Airlines mobile site. For travelers at the airport who want to be kept up to date with their flights will not have much use for the mobile site while they are traveling.

You can log on to view your reservation and if you are a JAL frequent flier, you can log in with your mileage account but you won’t be able to access information about your miles or account history from the mobile site.

The Japan Airlines app is useful for booking flights on the go or checking into your flight if you are not near a computer. But it’s not well designed and new pages open in new tabs, which is frustrating if you are looking for a streamlined process and a way to go back easily. All in all, most travelers are better off simply using the desktop site or checking in at the airport.
